How far does a ₹1.6 crore salary stretch in one of the world’s most expensive cities? A video featuring Maitri Mangal, a software engineer at Google, has gone viral as she breaks down her monthly expenses while living in New York City.
In a conversation with podcaster and author Kushal Lodha, Maitri shared insights into both her compensation and her day-to-day spending in the U.S.
“When I asked Maitri about the average salary at Google, she said it’s typically around ₹1.6 crore across various roles,” Lodha mentioned in the post caption.
However, what really caught viewers’ attention was Maitri’s detailed monthly budget. Filming from her New York apartment, she revealed that she spends roughly $5,000 (around ₹4.2 lakh) per month — with rent alone consuming a significant $3,000 (₹2.5 lakh).
Her other living expenses, such as food, groceries, and entertainment, range between $1,000 and $2,000 (₹85,000–₹1.7 lakh), and transportation costs add another $100 to $200 (₹8,500–₹17,000).
The video sparked discussions online, with many people highlighting the narrow gap between a high salary and high living costs in a global city like New York.
Maitri, who also shares tech-related content on Instagram, currently has a following of over 173,000.
